Surgery Practices In Jeopardy At Navan Hospital

The future of Our Lady's Hospital in Navan is uncertain today as the Health Service Executive prepares to make a major announcement later today.

It is believed that surgeries, including elective and emergency surgery, could cease at the hospital forcing patients to be treated in other hospitals in the region and in Dublin.

Strong local opposition from doctors both inside and outside the hospital is expected if the move goes ahead.

Local Fine Gael TD Damien English warned that the removal of surgical functions equated to the hospital being downgraded by "stealth".

Speaking this morning, the Fine Gael Spokesman said: ““This policy of downgrading Navan hospital makes no sense, especially when services are being transferred to hospitals which are already at over-capacity. These decisions are being taken for purely political decisions.

"The fact that this matter is even being speculated on is a direct result of Fianna Fáil’s piecemeal health policy, and the disastrous decisions being taken at the Cabinet table."

M English went on to say that Navan hospital was a vital facility for the entire county and that he did not accept the HSE’s argument for closure.

A spokesperson for the HSE confirmed that changes are to be made to surgical services in Navan and a statement will be made after staff had been informed later today.

The HSE announced three weeks ago that all keyhole surgery was to end at the hospital.

In February, the HSE announced an end to using the hospital to stabilise patients needing urgent surgical intervention before being transferred.
