Taoiseach 'Shocked' At Death Of Lally

Brian Cowen has spoken of his "shock" and "sadness" at the sudden death of actor Mick Lally.

Speaking today in response to the news of Mr Lally's death yesterday, the Taoiseach described him as one of the most loved actors of his generation and said Mr Lally would be dearly missed by the public and his colleagues in theatre and television.

"Versatile in both the Irish and English languages, his genius at capturing and portraying the essence of the characters he played brought him wide popular and critical acclaim," Mr Cowen said.

He added: "Our sympathies are with his wife Peige, three children Saileog, Maghnus and Darach and his parents."

The actor Mick Lally died yesterday morning at the age of 64 after being recently admitted to hospital.

Famous for his role as Miley Byrne in the TV series Glenroe, he starred in the Oscar-wining animation The Secret of Kells and earned a credit in Oliver Stone's swords and sandals epic, Alexander.

Born in November 1945 and reared in Tourmakeady, Co Mayo, he was the eldest of a family of seven children with five sisters and one brother. He went to the local national school in Tourmakeady and then to St Mary's College in Galway, the Galway Diocesan College.

He later studied history and Irish in UCG before teaching the subjects for six years in Tuam, from 1969-75. He gave that up to found the now Druid Theatre in Galway in 1975 along with Garry Hynes and Marie Mullen.

He then went on to star in many television series including Bracken and Ballykissangel before recently appearing in TG4’s Ros na Rún.
