Blaze-Hit Dublin Port Tunnel Reopens

A fire in the Dublin Port Tunnel has forced the closure of the crucial tunnel in both directions early this morning.

Although both lanes have since been reopened, traffic remains very heavy in the area and gardaí have appealed to motorists to use alternative routes.

The ban on trucks entering the city centre was lifted for the duration of the closure. It is now back in place.

The incident happened at about 7.30am when the brakes of a truck went on fire. One unit of the fire brigade was called and the blaze was extinguished. The tunnel re-opened fully before 9am.

Meanwhile, according to AA Roadwatch the National Ploughing Championships are currently causing delays of approximately 20mins for motorists approaching the ploughing site on the Orange route from the Monasterevin side. There are also on the Brown route from the Portlaoise side.

A spokesman said the roads were busy but moving on the grey route from Ballylynan. However, there is approximately 2km of tailback in the hard shoulder on the M7 northbound at J16 Portlaoise as people make their way to Athy for the ploughing and extreme caution is required.

Traffic is also "very heavy" on the M9 Kilkenny/Dublin Rd from J6 Carlow South to J4 Castledermot where traffic exits for the ploughing. Thousands of people are on site already and the car parks are filling up.

Events take place each day from 9am-6:30pm until this Thursday. The Ploughing site is on the Stradbally/Athy Rd (R428) and with 180,000 people expected over the three days, long delays should be expected.

It is expected that is could take up to an hour to leave the carparks each evening.
