Bus Overtakes Train In Rosslare
Irish Rail has closed the Waterford to Rosslare service and replaced it with a bus service.
"Existing rail season tickets will be accepted on bus services, and fares on the Bus Éireann services will replicate existing rail fares," a spokesperson said.
Bus Éireann will enhance its current route 370, which will see increased frequency of services from rural locations in the counties and enhanced direct bus links to Waterford city, Wexford town, New Ross, and regional hospitals and health centres.
A spokesperson said Bus Éireann would further develop its network of services in rural locations in south Wexford to increase the ability of people living in those areas to connect to Waterford, New Ross and Wexford using public transport.
Commenting on the decision to permit Iarnrod Eireann (IE) to suspend its passenger services between Rosslare and Waterford, Orm Kenny, Chairman of the SE Chambers' Access Task Group, said his initial reaction was of severe regret that the NTA took such a decision.
However, he said the Chambers of Commerce intended to continue to explore ways to salvage the line that has served south Wexford and Waterford for 100 years.
"While we are heartened by the NTA's support for our suggestion to create a community rail partnership (CRP) to manage the line's affairs, we feel that their decision has left IE completely off the hook, as now there will be no incentive for them to seriously explore the CRP model that has worked so satisfactorily in rural areas in the UK," he said.
