Defeated Unionists Select Leader
The Ulster Unionist Party membership is meeting on Wednesday to select a new leader.
It follows the resignation of Sir Reg Empey after the party's disastrous showing in the last general election in May - but last minute moves are taking place to halt a potentially divisive voting split.
There are two contenders - Lagan Valley MLA Basil McCrea and Tom Elliott, the Fermanagh and South Tyrone.
The selection meeting is scheduled to take place at the Waterfront Hall in Belfast this evening.
But, last-ditch efforts are being made to explore whether tonight's Ulster Unionist leadership vote can be avoided.
Several senior UUP sources in both men's camps have told the Belfast News Letter that a meeting took place on Monday night and another was held on Tuesday.
It is understood that discussions took place as to whether either candidate would be content to be deputy leader.
However, last night both men attempted to put the divisive leadership campaign behind them.
However, Mr Elliott is the clear favourite if tonight's vote goes ahead.

News that the government is considering reviewing its decision to cut funding for 26 disability organisations has been welcomed by Fianna Fáil Leader Micheál Martin. It follows an RTÉ report which suggested that Minister Alan kelly has "bowed to pressure" and is expected to announce a review of funding cuts.

Voting Takes Place For Meath By-Election
Voting will take place today in the Meath By-Election. There are eleven candidates for the seat. The turnout is believed to be poor due to the adverse weather conditions. The seat was made vacant after the death of former Fine Gael TD Shane McEntee. People can vote until 9pm tonight.

Fianna Fáil has called for Irish citizens living overseas to be given the right to vote in Presidential and Seanad Éireann elections. The party's Spokesperson for the Irish Overseas and Diaspora Senator Mark Daly is detailing the reforms ahead of St. Patrick's celebrations this week.

Abandonment Of e-Voting To Cost €54.5m
It has been revealed today that almost €54.5m has been spent dismantling the proposed electronic voting system since 2003. According to a report published today from the office of the Comptroller and Auditor General says over €3m has now been spent on storage of the abandoned voting machines.

A new research study has shown that thousands Of Irish women taking calcium tablets to slow osteoporosis are doubling their risk of having a heart attack. The research, published this morning in the online issue of the journal Heart, states that the supplements are neither safe nor effective and so should be “taken with caution”.
