Wexford Gardaí Station Contract Delayed

Construction work appears to be a long way off on a proposed new, multi-million Gardaí station, that is supposed to be being built in Wexford.

It has emerged that the planned development is entirely dependent on the fate of the economy.

Senior staff from the Office of Public Works (OPW) told Chief Superintendent John Roche and members of the Joint Policing Committee (JPC) that OPW could not give a "cast iron commitment" that the station will be complete at any definite date.

John McMahon, a commissioner with the OPW and Assistant Principal Architect for the proposed Gardaí station at Rocksborough, Ciaran O'Connor, addressed a meeting of the JPC at Council Chambers.

Mr McMahon said he hopes the tender for the project will be accepted by November of next year, adding that the state-of-the-art station will then take 24 months to build.

Gardaí would welcome any new premises, having had to work in old premises on Roche's Road over the past few decades.
