Man Charged In PSNI Dissident Probe

A 32-year-old man is due to appear in Derry Magistrates Court this morning charged with collecting information likely to be useful to terrorists.

It comes after police investigating dissident republican activity arrested two men yesterday in Co Londonderry.

The pair, aged 31 and 32, were detained in the Magherafelt area on Thursday morning and taken for questioning to the PSNI's Serious Crime Suite in Antrim.

The man who has been charged was arrested at the same time as the 31-year-old man who has now been released pending a report.

Mid-Ulster DUP Assembly MLA and NI Policing Board member, Ian McCrea, has welcomed the PSNI's pro-active move.

Mr McCrea said: "I trust this will prove vital in the quest to rid our country from the scourge of dissident hatred and violence.

"I would encourage anyone with information in relation to dissident activity to come forward immediately to the police, because it is with strong policing and the help of the community we can overcome terrorism in Northern Ireland," he said.
