Cowen Targets Disarmament In Brussels
Taoiseach Brian Cowen, is to make a keynote speech on the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons in Brussels today.
The speech is part of Mr Cowen's attendance at the eighth Asia Europe Summit taking place on Monday and Tuesday.
The topics for discussion cover a wide range of issues of interest to both regions under four overall themes - global financial and economic governance; sustainable development; international cooperation on other global issues such as non proliferation of nuclear weapons; and the future of ASEM.
A spokesman for Fianna Fail said this morning that the Taoiseach is expected to participate in the overall discussions, giving a keynote address on the topic of disarmament and non – proliferation of nuclear weapons, recalling Ireland's strong association with the Non - Proliferation Treaty and calling for a renewed effort to ensure its full implementation.
Ahead of the Summit, the Taoiseach will attend an Enterprise Ireland business event focussed on the IT for healthcare market in Belgium and the Netherlands. He will also participate in the 12th Asia-Europe Business Forum, which is organised in parallel to the ASEM Summit.
The tone of the speech is of great interest to anti nuclear arms groups, coming as it does on the heel of an increased budget for nuclear weapons programs by the United States. The US has put through a 10% increase of funding levels for the 2010 budget year.
Congressional Democrats and Republicans agreed this week, in a continuing budget resolution that funds government for the next two months, to support a $624 million increase for weapons work by the National Nuclear Security Administration.
