A 48-year-old man has died as a result of serious injuries he received in his own home after a serious assault.
Gardaí have launched a murder investigation into the attack during which, Limerick man Joe O'Donnell, 48, of Hyde Road, suffered serious head wounds in the early hours of Friday morning.
He passed away at the Mid Western Regional Hospital on Saturday evening.
A post-mortem examination, carried out by assistant state pathologist Dr Khalid Jaber yesterday, has led to gardai based in Roxboro having now launched a murder investigation.
A 22-year-old man, who was known to the victim, was arrested on Friday morning shortly after gardai found Mr O'Donnell lying unconscious at his home on the Hyde Road.
He was released without charge late on Saturday with a file being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.
