Waterford Hit By Weekend Brawls
Rural Waterford is being plagued by street brawls with the latest seeing a young man treated for facial injuries at Cork University Hospital.
A female was punched in the face and a number of people were arrested for public order offences as the city experienced one of its blackest weekends to date.
The Waterford News & Star reported this week that, in the early hours of Sunday morning a 20-year-old city man sustained facial injuries on John Street when he was set upon by two teenagers, in what was described by Gardaí as an unprovoked attack.
He was hit by a 16-year-old and an 18-year-old at around 3.40am and received blows to his face and kicks to his head. He was brought to Waterford Regional Hospital and had to be transferred to Cork University Hospital on Sunday where he is said to be in a stable condition.
Gardaí believe there was no motive for the attack and said the teenagers just lashed out at the unsuspecting man.
The two teenagers were arrested and questioned by Gardaí. They were later released and a file will be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.
A female was also assaulted as she walked along Parnell Street at 2.45am on Sunday morning.
The 26-year-old was punched in the face by another female who approached her and took her bag. The 20-year-old later dropped the bag and was arrested and questioned by Gardaí. She has been released pending further enquiries.
Also over the weekend a number of people were treated in Waterford Regional Hospital after they were set upon in Maypark Lane. It is believed a group were refused entry into a house party and when others left the party they were set upon.
Gardaí are encouraging anyone injured during the incident in the early hours of Sunday morning to contact them.
