Teen Dies After Street Fight

The teenage man, attacked by gang of youths in Dundalk, has died in hospital.

Niall Dorr, 18, sustained serious injuries after being subjected to a vicious assault by a gang of youths along Castle Road, Dundalk between 9.00pm and 9.20pm on Wednesday. He died last night in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital.

Gardai in Dundalk said they are investigating the incident and have launched an appeal to anyone who may have been in the Castle Road area of Dundalk between 9.00pm and 9.30pm on Wednesday, or anyone who may have any information to contact Dundalk Garda station on 042-9388400 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800-666-111.

Gardai said they would particularly like to speak to a motorist who reported the incident to a passing Garda patrol car.

Two men in their early 20s have been arrested in relation to the incident and are detained at Dundalk Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

Mr Dorr was with two friends walking down Castle Road in Dundalk just after 9pm on Wednesday when the row broke out with a group of up to seven others.

According to reports this morning, officers are investigating claims that Niall had been beaten with an implement, possibly a bar, but it has emerged that his injuries showed few signs of being inflicted with a weapon.

A knife was also recovered, but it was unclear if any knife-related injuries were sustained. Gardai also recovered a "block" used for sharpening knives.

Oficers are awaiting the result of a post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of the teenager's death.
