Builders Get €20m Hospital Building Boost

The Irish construction sector has received some good news this week with confirmation that work on the €20 million-plus development of a new unit at a Dublin hospital is to commence immediately.

John Paul Construction is expected to begin the contract for the development of a cystic fibrosis (CF) unit at St Vincent's hospital in Dublin after the contract was signed on Thursday.

The area for the unit has been cleared, finance is in place and a completion date is scheduled for mid-2012.

The unit is to be a five-storey, 100-bed hospital block of which two storeys and 30-35 beds in individual en suite units and will be dedicated to cystic fibrosis patients.

This move in the face of a growing recession is being seen as a victory for cystic fibrosis campaigners who have ling sought such a resource.

Heart Disease 'Link' In Swine Flu Death
Unconfirmed reports today say that the second person to die from swine flu in Ireland did in fact have a history of illness. The 55-year-old Dublin bank official was at first thought not to have had an underlying condition, but the Irish Times has reported today that he suffered a heart attack some months ago.

Protection Of Life During Pregnancy Bill Published
The Protection of Life during Pregnancy Bill has been published by the government following approval by the Cabinet. Several significant changes have been made to the outline of the Bill, which was published in April. The Minister for Health will be given the power to stop suspended an institution if deemed to be operating the Act inappropriately.

Water At Beaumont Hospital Found To Be Contaminated
E-coli and coliforms have been discovered in the water at Beaumont Hospital. Routine testing at the hospital found that contaminants in the radiation oncology unit. Cancer patients at the hospital have been advised not to drink the water.
