Marathon Runners Approach Finish

Kenya's Moses Kibet has broken the Dublin City Marathon record, winning with the amazing time of 2:08.56.

Over 13,000 runners took off from Fitzwilliam Square this morning, for the 31st Lifestyle Sports-adidas Dublin Marathon with over seventy-four nations represented while, according to organisers, the 2010 Irish field was the largest ever present.

In second place at the record-breaking race was Ethiopian Kedir Fikadu, while another Kenyan, Mourice Musyoki, came third.

“We are delighted to break the 13,000 mark for the first time” said Race Director Jim Aughney “And the key reason we have is the big increase in Irish entries". "Irish people are back running again, and it bodes well for the sustained growth of Dublin into the future,” he added.

The 26.2 mile race sees participants travel from the city centre out through the Phoenix Park, back around UCD, and then returning to the finish at Merrion Square.

Motorists are being advised that traffic restrictions and diversions are in place from early this morning until at least 6pm.

Adidas has been a sponsor of the marathon for 10 years, and Lifestyle Sports for three years.

Both have decided not to renew their contracts, leaving the marathon’s organisers looking for new sponsors for next year.
