Man Arrested Over Wexford Hit And Run
A man in his 30s has been arrested in connection with a hit and run incident that caused the death of a young Wexford student.
Gardai investigating the fatal road traffic collision, which took place at Gorey, in County Wexford, on Sunday the 24th of October said they arrested a man yesterday afternoon.
The 20-year-old woman was killed during the hit-and-run incident on the Main Street in Gorey shortly after 2.30am on Sunday morning after a night out.
Kelly Gregan was knocked down by a car, which then drove off and was later discovered burnt out nearby. She had been on a night out with friends, one of which was also injured during the incident.
Gardaí in Gorey said they had been alerted to the presence of a speeding car in the town and it is believed that at least one garda car was around 500m from the area when the collision took place.
However, it is understood that the car involved in the collision was not being pursued by a garda vehicle at the time.
The man is being detained at Gorey Garda station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.
Ms Grgan's death took the total number of people killed in separate road crashes over the Bank Holiday weekend to four.
Fine Gael Road Safety Spokesperson, Tom Hayes TD, on Saturday urged drivers to take care on the roads and supported the call of the Gardai to young, male drivers to slow down.
"There have already been 165 fatalities this year before this weekend. It is clear we can never afford to let road safety standards slip. There are a significant number of recommendations in the current Road Safety Strategy that have yet to be implemented and it is high time they were," he said.
