Students To March Over Fees Increase
Ireland's students will be holding a 'national march' this Wednesday, in Dublin city centre, in protest against a hike in college registration fees
Announcing the action this morning, a spokesman for the Union of Students of Ireland (USI) said the demonstration will highlight the "consistent inaction" by the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Innovation, Batt O' Keeffe, and the Government.
The reaction from the student body comes after Minister for Defence Tony Killeen refused to rule out substantial increases in registration fees in December's Budget.
It’s believed that doubling of college fees to €3,000 would result in a large number of students dropping out of college.
The USI spokesman accused the Government of failing to take drastic measures to combat the unemployment and emigration crisis among the State's graduates.
"Can you afford another massive hike in the registration fee to €3000? Can you afford another 10% cut to the student maintenance grant?" the spokesman said.
Following this national march, a number of regional marches will also be held by USI in Galway and Cork cities on November 18st and December 1st respectively.
USI is asking for participants in the march, which will gather at Parnell Square at 12.30pm on the day, and then march to Government buildings near Merrion Square in Dublin 2.
