HSE Meets Unions Over Retirement Scheme

Health Service Executive (HSE) management and unions were this week meeting at the LRC to discuss proposals to shed up to 5,000 staff by the end of the year.

The €400m voluntary redundancy and early retirement scheme initially targets managerial and administrative staff, but may be extended to support staff.

Staff have until the end of November to confirm that they want to leave the HSE, and must be gone by the end of December.

IMPACT, which represents administrative grades, said its concerns include the terms of the redundancy scheme, which it believes are inadequate.

It has also criticised the tight timeframe for imposing the job cuts, and the lack of management proposals to address gaps in the system which will emerge after the scheme is implemented.

Also, both IMPACT and SIPTU - which represents support staff - also fear that posts made redundant might be outsourced to agency or contract staff.
