'Sky High' Budget Protest In Dublin

A man has been arrested in connection with the use of a small crane displaying protest hoardings outside Leinster House in Dublin.

The 'cherry picker' was manoeuvred in front of the Government building at 7.20am this morning emblazoned with slogans regarding Anglo Irish Bank and ministerial pensions.

Gardaí later removed a number of the anti-government slogans and placards attached to the vehicle.

Reports this morning say a man wearing a builder's hard hat and a yellow fluorescent coat was in the cage at the top of the crane, the arm of which was fully extended, playing music through loud speakers and threw a number of tennis balls at the ground below.

The slogans read 'Anglo Toxic Bank', 'Winner Dermot Ahern €250,000 payoff', and Four million pension losers'.

The protest is believed to be related to this afternoon's crucial budget hearing in the Dáil where the Government's severe budget will be debated.

The control panel at the base of the crane was sealed off, preventing gardaí from bringing the protester back to ground. Shortly before 8.40am he gave gardaí instructions on how to lower the arm of the crane and was driven away from the scene in a garda van.

There are no reports of traffic disruption on the street and Gardaí are now attempting to remove the crane from Kildare Street.
