Water Supply Returned To Galway

Water supplies in Galway city have been made operational after freezing conditions caused a stoppage to the supply.

Galway City Council said reservoir levels recovered to minimum operational levels yesterday and continued to increase overnight.

In a statement released yesterday evening, A Galway County Council spokesman said: " We wish to advise that the Clonfert and Meelick areas will continue to experience disruption to water supply until further notice due to burst water mains. A water tanker will be provided at Clonfert Church and water fountains will be activated at Eyrecourt to facilitate consumers in those areas.

"Also, the Perrsepark Group Water Scheme will experience disruption to water supply today due to burst water main."

The spokesman revealed that water demand in the Woodford are had increased by 60%. It is understood the increase in demand is due to households continually running water in order to stop pipes from freezing up.

The Council disrupted supply from 10pm to 8am last night in order to re-fill the reservoir and ensure continuity of supply.

The spokesman said the council apologised for the inconvenience and asked residents to conserve water.

However, this morning, mains supply was restored with sufficient water pressure in all areas of the city, although some households may still be without water due to either pipes being frozen or an airlock in the plumbing system. The council said that householders should contact a plumber to restore their supply.

The council has asked that the public continues to conserve water and to notify them on 091 536 400 of the location of any major leaks.
