Dempsey Not To Stand In Election
Minister for Transport Noel Dempsey has joined a string of Fianna Fáil Ministers today, after announcing he will not stand the next year's General Election.
The current Minister for Justice Dermot Ahern recently also announced his retirement from politics, while last night's Mayo FF TD Beverly Flynn said she will also not contest the next election.
Minister Dempsey said he wanted to sincerely thank the people of Meath for their support over three decades.
"I also want to say a heartfelt thank you to my close and extended family and the many dedicated and committed members of Fianna Fail in Meath who canvassed for me in all of the elections over the years.
"Everybody who worked with me and supported me over the years can share in the credit of our achievements. Whatever I achieved over the past 33 years of public life I have achieved with their support and guidance.
"It has been an honour and a privilege to serve the people of Meath as a Councillor and a T.D. and to serve my country as a Minister. I intend to continue to work hard for my constituency and the country up until the next election.”
Transport Minister Noel Dempsey said on Thursday he would make an announcement about whether he will or will be standing in the next General Election. He made the comments while speaking to journalists about the latest Ipsos-MRBI opinion poll for the Irish Times, which showed support for Fianna Fáil at an all-time low of 17%.
Mr Dempsey seemed to indicate in last week's Newstalk programme that he may bow out of the coming election. Reacting to the poll, Mr Dempsey said Fianna Fáil will have a very difficult election but they will put their plan to the people and others will do the same.
