Green TD Sleeps Rough For Charity
A Carlow-Kilkenny TD is to sleep rough tonight to highlight the growing problem of homelessness in Ireland.
Green Party deputy Mary White, who is Minister for Equality, Integration and Human Rights, said she wanted to send a message of support to those in vulnerable positions, particularly during the cold weather.
In a statement released this morning, she said: “I am participating in [this] evening’s ‘Rough Sleep’ to raise awareness of the serious issue of homelessness in Carlow and Kilkenny and across the country. I want to send a strong signal of support to those in vulnerable positions, particularly during this very cold weather.”
She added: “I want to commend the crucial and tireless work of the staff and volunteers at the Monastery Hostel in Carlow. The Hostel offers vital services including accommodation, shower facilities, laundry, counselling as well as training and development opportunities.
"I also want to acknowledge the great work done by the Good Shepherd Centre in Kilkenny. The work these organisations, along with many other around the country, are fundamental in tackling the issue of homelessness.”
The Minister said that one person sleeping on the streets is one person too many and that she hoped people would come this evening and make a donation, however big or small, to support the charity organisations.
Green Party TD for Carlow/Kilkenny, Mary White, is to sleep rough on Tullow Street in Carlow tomorrow night (December 21st) from 8pm.
