Dáil Return To See Stormy Session

The Irish Premier, Brian Cowen will be in Dáil this afternoon as the parliament returns after its Christmas break.

The Cabinet is this morning due to meet to finalise the list of legislation it hopes to get through the Oireachtas before the election, but Taoiseach's Brian Cowen is expected to be attacked again despite having denied any impropriety in his dealings with the former Anglo Irish Bank chairman.

On Monday, Mr Cowen said the golf outing he attended with Mr FitzPatrick in July 2008 was in full public view.

He said there was nothing untoward about it, with no hidden or secret agenda and no concessions, favours or interventions requested or granted.

In relation to the earlier phone call from Mr FitzPatrick relating to the issue of the Quinn shareholding in Anglo, Mr Cowen said he had informed about the issue by the Governor of the Central Bank already.

Either way, his performance will be closely watched by the Green Party and by his own colleagues in Fianna Fáil - even though the Green Party has said it will stay in Government until the Finance Bill is passed.

The list of other measures to be passed will give the best indication yet of exactly when the General Election is likely to be called.

Mr Cowen will later take Leaders' Questions in the Dáil along with other elements of house business.
