Cowen's 'Position In Peril' As Party Meets
Amidst increasing speculation that Fianna Fáil could be on the brink of a leadership change - as Brian Cowen's position remains perilous - a challenge from either senior Ministers or backbenchers has been mooted.
However, while the parliamentary party will meet today when Premier and leader, Brian Cowen will face a showdown over a motion of no confidence, the Longford Westmeath TD, Mary O'Rourke, has said any moves within the party would be "futile".
Despite reports today suggesting that the party could be on the brink of a leadership heave, TDs understood to be behind the move are denying any involvement this morning before a meeting of the parliamentary party at midday.
It has been said that Mr Cowen's explanation of his Anglo contacts in the Dáil yesterday has tipped many backbenchers over the edge.
However, influential TD, Mary O'Rourke has since said the party is "far too near a General Election for a leadership heave".

Second Senator To 'Clarify' Expenses
A second Irish Senatoor is being asked to "clarify" the expenses he has claimed after the supplementary payments to members of both houses were published last week. Last night Taoiseach Brian Cowen set in motion the process to exclude Senator Ivor Callely from the Fianna Fáil parliamentary party over his €81,000 in travel allowance claims.

Lobbying Battle Over 'No Confidence' In Kenny
The Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny has launched a campaign of intensive lobbying after nine members of the Fine Gael frontbench said they no longer have confidence in his leadership. Tomorrow, Mr Kenny faces his own vote of no confidence after the Taoiseach Brian Cowen scraped through a Daíl wide vote of confidence by five votes yesterday.

Growing Calls For Cowen To Quit
The Irish Cabinet is exhibiting growing "unease" about the leadership of Irish Prime Minister Brian Cowen. Even among supporters within Ireland's ruling party, fresh doubts have surfaced today with the Dáil Tourism Minister, Mary Hanafin, saying she would give her own views when she meets Mr Cowen later.

Cowen 'Not Most Popular' Leader: FF
There's no problem with Brian Cowen's leadership at all - that's according to Fianna Fáil's Chief Whip. John Curran acknowledged the Taoiseach was not the most popular party leader, as recent opinion polls had indicated, but he insisted "this had to be put in the context of the difficult and challenging issues" being faced by the Government.

Crash Death Garda Buried Today
The funeral of the young garda who died in a road crash in Co Donegal at the weekend has taken place in Co Leitrim. Gary McLoughlin, 24, from Fenagh near Ballinamore, was killed when the patrol car he was travelling in with a colleague was in a collision with another vehicle near Burt, Co Donegal, on the main Letterkenny to Derry Road.
