East Belfast Security Alert Ends

The Army bomb squad has removed a suspicious device at the centre of a security alert in east Belfast.

The object was reported outside a house on London Road, near the Ravenhill Road, at around 7am.

Local Alliance Councillor Máire Hendron has expressed disgust at those involved and has attended the scene on Friday morning to help people evacuated from their homes.

"This alert caused seriously disruption to people living in the surrounding area. People were evacuated from their homes and a number of families with young children have been out of their houses since 7.30am in the morning," she said.

Meanwhile, Royal Mail has said a firework caused a small explosion and prompted another security alert at the UK's National Returns Centre (used for all undelivered post) at the Tomb Street sorting office near Belfast city centre.

The minor explosion happened as an employee was opening a package containing the firework.

The employee was not injured, but Army Technical Officers and the Fire and Rescue Service were dispatched to the scene in the Tomb Street area and the building was evacuated for about half an hour.
