Cancelled Flights As Aer Lingus Rota Opposed

High flyers in Aer Lingus are being brought down to earth today as the airline is introducing new cabin crew rosters, which have been opposed by the IMPACT trade union.

There has been disagreement between Aer Lingus management and cabin crew over rosters for months, with cabin crew engaging in a work-to-rule since 12 October.

As a result, Aer Lingus has cancelled a flight this afternoon from Dublin to Boston and a later service from Boston to Dublin after cabin crew refused to operate the controversial new rosters.

The airline said passengers booked on the Dublin-Boston service, which was scheduled to leave at 2.00pm, have been offered seats on a service to New York and a road transfer to Boston or the alternative of re-booking on a flight to Boston tomorrow.

The cabin crew concerned have been invited to attend individual meetings with management in relation to their refusal to operate new rosters, which were introduced by the airline today.

All other grades except cabin crew have implemented the Greenfield programme proposals - with the forced adoption of the measures remaining contentious.

The new rosters form part of the implementation of a cost-cutting programme introduced by the airline last year.

Management has warned workers that they will be removed from the payroll if they do not comply with the new arrangements.

IMPACT said that workers had accepted they would have to work more hours in the air, but did not agree to the new rosters.

The union confirmed that cabin crew would continue with their industrial action today, but said that there was no question of strike action - despite today's cancellation.

In other industrial relations' news, SIPTU met workers in ferry operator DFDS following the Dutch company's announcement it is to close its routes between Dublin and the English ports of Birkenhead and Heysham.

Officials said the move is "a most serious development for Dublin Port". Of about 200 jobs affected as a result of the route closures, some 48 of the workers are based in Dublin, and the union met them this morning.

The two routes will cease at the end of January, with three ships attached to the services moving off the Irish Sea as a result.
