Angry Scenes As Two Face Murder Charges
A Limerick courthouse has been the scene of angry clashes between the families of two murder victims and two men charged with their killing.
The two men appeared in court on charges arising from the deaths of two people whose bodies were found in Southill last week.
Patrick O'Brien, 31, of 30 Glanntán, Golflinks Road, Castletroy, Limerick and Thomas Stuart, 27, of The Cedars, Brierfield, Castletroy were both charged with the murders of Des Kelly, 24, and Breda Waters, 28, at O'Malley Park on January 9.
A 30-strong crowd charged at Gardaí lines as both suspects were led into the Limerick Court last night, but no one was injured.
Inside, as members from both the Kelly and Waters families looked on, the court heard that Mr O'Brien had remained silent when the charges were read to him, while Mr Stuart had said sorry to one of the charges and made no reply to the other charge.
In court Mr Stuart denied he said sorry to the first charge. Both were granted free legal aid and remanded in custody to appear via video link at the District court on 20 January.
According to reports this morning, one of the suspects, Patrick O'Brien, shouted obscenities as the families of the victims. The family are said to have retuned their own volley of abuse at the suspect.
The cases are adjourned until Thursday when both will appear before Limerick District Court via video link from Limerick Prison.
