Tragic RIR Soldier Dies In Accident
The Northern soldier who died in an accident in Afghanistan's Helmand province has been named overnight as 20-year-old David Dalzell.
Ranger Dalzell, was from Bangor in Co Down and serving with 1st Battalion the Royal Irish Regiment when the accident happened on Friday in Nad-e Ali, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) said.
It emerged today that he might have been shot dead accidentally as he and a colleague cleaned their rifles.
Ranger Dalzell joined the the Royal Irish Regiment based at Tern Hill, Shropshire, in July 2010 after his recruit training and was on his first deployment.
Also over the weekend, a long-serving member of the Parachute Regiment was killed in an explosion.
Company Sergeant Major Colin Beckett, 36, died in the village of Shaheed, also in Nad-e Ali district when an improvised explosive device (IED) blew up as he was moving into position to cover his comrades.
Sgt Maj Beckett joined the Army in 1990 and was known as 'Tom' and had served in Iraq, Kosovo and Northern Ireland.

Woman, 82, Dies In Road Accident
An 82-year-old woman has died following a road accident in Donegal. The crash occurred at around 3.50pm on Monday (18 August) at The Ross in Bundoran. Gardaí have said a car collided with a fence in the incident. The woman was transferred to Sligo Hospital but later died from her injuries. Anyone with information is asked to contact Gardaí.

Two Tourists Have Died In Kerry Pony And Trap Accident
Two American tourists have died in an incident involving a pony and trap near popular tourist attraction Gap of Dunloe in Kerry. The couple, who were in their 60s, were travelling on a narrow mountain path, when their carriage went off the road. They were pronounced dead at the scene and brought to University Hospital Kerry.

Man Killed In Co Wicklow Paragliding Accident
A man has died following a paragliding accident in County Wicklow. His body was discovered on Sunday 12 April after a search was launched when he failed to return to his north Dublin home. Wicklow Mountain Rescue conducted the search along with the Irish Coast Guard Rescue.

The Stormont First Minister Peter Robinson has this morning expressed his sympathy to the family of a soldier from the 1st Battalion Irish Guards who has been killed in Afghanistan. The Ministry of Defence (MoD) announced that he was shot in an ambush while patrolling in the Nahr-e Saraj district of Helmand Province yesterday afternoon.

Man And Child Die In Plane Crash In Co Offaly
An air accident investigation has been launched following the death of a man and seven-year-old boy in a plane crash near Clonbullogue on Sunday, 13 May. The remains of the man and child were taken from the wreckage after a six-hour recovery operation. The plane had come down in a bog.
