'Travellers' Blamed On Cork Murder

A feud among the Travelling community is thought to be behind a murder this week.

Gardaí investigating the violent death of a man in Cork yesterday afternoon believe it was a planned killing connected to a long-running feud among Travellers.

Patrick 'Packie' Hogan, a father-of-five in his 40s from Carrigaline, was shot dead as he tried to escape from a gunman on the Glen Road near Waterloo Church just outside Blarney.

Three men who were arrested last night are being held at Mayfield and Gurranabraher garda stations and can be questioned for up to a week.

Gardaí with sniffer dogs are searching an area around Garrycloyne Cemetery for the murder weapon - believed to be a rifle - while the deceased's body remains at the scene.

They are also waiting to interview a man in his 30s who managed to escape when Mr Hogan was shot.

Gardaí at Gurranabraher say they have already interviewed some witnesses but are appealing for any with information to contact them.
