Roscommon Post Office Raided

A Roscommon Post Office has been raided this morning by an armed gang.

Gardaí at Castlerea investigating the robbery, which occurred shortly before 10am this morning, in Granlahan, Castlerea, Co. Roscommon, said three masked man entered the post office. Two were armed with what appeared to be firearms.

The post office was occupied by a female member of staff who was locked in a room at the rear of the premises.

There were no members of the public in the shop at the time. No shots were fired or persons injured.

An undisclosed amount of money and an unknown amount of cigarettes were stolen.

The raiders made their getaway in a green Nissan Almera car with a 01 LH registration.

A Gardaí spokesman asked that anyone who may have been in the area at the time and witnessed the robbery or has information to offer relating to the car are asked to contact Gardaí at Castlerea on 094 9621630, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.

Govt Accused of Undermining Post Office Network
The government has been accused of continuing to undermine the Post Office network across Ireland. Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Communications Michael Moynihan made the comments after the Department of Social Protection issued letters to jobseekers recommending that they bypass Post Offices by using financial institutions to receive their payments.
