Nine Arrested Over Drug Find

A total of nine men and women have been arrested in County Limerick in connection with a major drugs operation.

According to a Gardaí spokesman on Monday morning, the arrests were made as part of an on going operation assisted by the Garda National Drugs Unit.

Their investigations led to a number searches and the arrest of nine people - two females and seven males - in Limerick on Saturday.

All nine were charged and released on bail and will appear before Limerick District Court 14 at 10.30am on Thursday.

Gardaí moved on the suspects as part of an operation into drug trafficking, which had earlier resulted in the arrest of 16 people - four females and twelve males – on Friday, also in Limerick.

Thirteen of those arrested - three females and 11 males - have been charged and appeared before Limerick District Court on Saturday. Three still remain in custody

Speaking on Monday morning, Supt Frank O'Brien, who is leading the investigation in Limerick said: "An Garda Síochána is committed to tackling the supply of drugs at all levels in keeping with our commitment to the National Drug Strategy. The Garda National Drug Unit works together with local Garda Drug Units to ensure a coordinated and effective approach to protecting our communities, individuals and their families from the harm and pain caused by drug use.

"By working with other agencies and utilising innovative approaches we will continue to play our part in maintaining a safe community for everyone"

Meanwhile, in Northern Ireland, two men aged 25 and 26 were arrested after police discovered a cannabis factory on a premises in County Down.

PSNI officers uncovered the factory on Killard Road, Downpatrick yesterday when investigating suspicious activity in the area.

A PSNI spokeswoman said up to £134,000 of cannabis plants and cultivating equipment was recovered in the raid.

CSO Publishes 2018 Crime Detection Figures
The Central Statistics Office (CSO) has published crime detection figures for the first time in four years. The figures are relating to 2018, with detection rates for murder incidents at 72%. Detection of controlled drug offences represent a high of 85%, while sexual offence detection remained low at just 11%.
