Arrest Over Marie Greene Disappearance

A man has been arrested in connection with the disappearance of 37-year-old Marie Greene.

Gardai in Athlone investigating the circumstances surrounding the missing woman said on Monday morning they had arrested a male in his 60s on suspicion of murder.

The arrest follows a surveillance operation.

He is being detained in Athlone Garda Station under the provisions of Section 4 Criminal Justice Act.

Meanwhile, Gardaí have sealed off a house in the Monksland area of Athlone as part of their ongoing inquiries. A forensic assessment of the dwelling is believed to be taking place.

Marie Greene from Co Westmeath has not been seen since 9pm last Sunday after she left her home at St Mel's terrace in the town. Her family feared she was either dead or being held against her will.

Her mother, Winnie Greene, said last week that it was out of character for Marie not to keep in touch with her family.

Ms Greene is 5ft 5in and of slim build with fair hair. She was wearing jeans, white trainers and a blue fleece when she disappeared.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Athlone Gardai on 090 6492600.
