Arrests Follow Double Newry Stabbing
The border city of Newry has been blighted by a double stabling incident.
Two men have been taken to hospital in the North after they were stabbed in the stomach.
It is understood there was an altercation some time before 5am this morning at a house in Drumgullion Avenue, Newry. A third man received a slash wound to his arm.
Commenting, SDLP Newry Cllr Gary Stokes has expressed his alarm: "I strongly condemn these stabbings which have alarmed people in our community.
"While, thankfully, these attacks did not result in the loss of life, the fact is they very easily could have.
"The growing number of incidents in which knives have been used in Newry will send a shiver down the spine of many people in our city," he said, this morning.
"It is a problem that needs to be addressed quickly and collectively by all relevant agencies here.
"It is vital that the community works together with the police to tackle this type of violent crime. I strongly appeal to anyone with information about this incident to pass it onto the PSNI immediately."
The PSNI said that the men's injuries are not thought to be life threatening and that two men aged 34 and 43-years-of-age have been arrested in connection with the incident.
There are a growing number of such attacks, with a 26-year-old man arrested following a stabbing in the Clondara Street area of west Belfast during the early hours of Monday morning.
It's understood the victim sustained three puncture wounds to the chest and one to the head during the incident, which was reported at around 1.15am.
The arrested person was detained in Brooke Crescent a short time later.
The PSNI said that initial enquiries suggest the Belfast stabbing occurred in the street and not inside a property.
Another violent incident this week ended in tragedy with a man murdered in Londonderry while another man was left in a critical condition following the vicious attack.
The badly injured man was transferred to Belfast's Royal Victoria Hospital where he was understood to be suffering from serious head injuries.
