Recount Underway In Galway West
Galway West is the final constituency to finalise it's elected TDs as a recount gets underway on Tuesday morning.
Currently, Independent candidate Catherine Connolly and Fine Gael's Seán Kyne are separated by just 17 votes.
Fine Gael's Brian Walsh won the third seat after the 12th count, which concluded at 6am on Tuesday morning. Three candidates remain in contention for last two seats - Ms Connolly, Mr Kyne and Independent Noel Grealish.
Returning Officer Marian Chambers Higgins announced Kyne and Grealish elected without reaching the quota and then proceeded to eliminate Connolly.
Following several minutes of jubilant scenes, Cllr Connolly consulted with her advisers and spoke with Ms Chambers Higgins to request a recount.
It was then announced that a full recount would take at 4pm.
A practicing Barrister, Ms Connelly was standing on a manifesto defending working conditions for nurses and improvements to Galway's infrastructure.
In other election news, Fine Gael's Simon Harris was elected in his constituency of Wicklow overnight. At 24 years of age, he will be the youngest TD in the 31st Dáil.
Newly elected Dún Laoghaire TD, Richard Boyd Barrett of People Before Profit, said Labour has no right to go into government with a party that will seek cuts and more austerity.
He also said that he did not accept the notion that Ireland has to answer to the IMF and the country has options.
