Kenny Wins North's Backing

The Stormont First Minister, Peter Robinson and the Deputy First Minister, Martin McGuinness have spoken with Fine Gael Leader Enda Kenny this morning to congratulate him on his party's general election success.

The DUP Leader, Mr Robinson said: "I look forward to working with Mr Kenny over the coming period.

"I will be watching closely developments in the Republic as the new government sets about its difficult task of rebuilding a stable economy."

Sinn Fein's Martin McGuinness said: "The election result has significantly changed the political landscape and over the coming weeks and months we will look to build and strengthen our relationship with the new government in the South.

"It is clear that there are many areas where we can work together constructively for the betterment of all the people of Ireland."

Government To Prioritise Seanad Referendum
The Government has said it will prioritise a referendum on the abolition of the Seanad. In the Dáil, Taoiseach Enda Kenny said his department will begin working on it immediately. However he added that drawing up the bill to do away with the Seanad would not be a simple task.

Taoiseach To Examine Garda Allegations Documents 'Very Carefully'
Documents given to the Taoiseach Enda Kenny on Wednesday night by Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin have been described as containing "very serious allegations" about garda investigation. The Taoiseach, who said that Mr Martin was right to hand over the documents, adding that they would be examined "very carefully indeed".

Sheehan 'Embarrassment' Says Kenny
Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny has called the incident involving PJ Sheehan as an "embarrassment to the party". Yesterday, Cork South West TD PJ Sheehan resigned from the party after levelling drunken abuse at a female Garda last July. He made the announcement after a meeting with the Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny on Tuesday morning.

Seanad 'Should Be Abolished' - Fine Gael
Democracy remains at the heart of the political process in Ireland – even though there has been a call to abolish the Upper House. The Taoiseach, Brian Cowen, has said that he believes the country needs to maintain its democratic institutions and that democratic accountability was more important than ever.

Daíl Outraged By Taoiseach's 'F**kers' Remark
Brian Cowen was caught on microphone on Wednesday uttering the phrase "those f**kers", following heated exchanges in the Daíl. It was revealed the expletive was aimed at the state agency responsible for consumer protection and not at members of the opposition.
