Student Conference Debates Policies

Hundreds of student representatives from around the country have gathered in Dunboyne, Co Meath for the annual National Congress of the Union of Students in Ireland (USI).

At today's event, student delegates representing over 450,000 members in colleges across the island, will debate policy and discuss the issues currently facing students.

These delegates will elect new USI officers, who will work on behalf of the students of Ireland throughout the coming academic year.

Running for re-election this year is USI President, Gary Redmond, from Arklow in Co Wicklow.

Sean Gallagher, of 'Dragon's Den', spoke passionately about how the young people of Ireland can drive Ireland's economy forward when he officially opened USI Congress yesterday.

USI will also lobby the new Minister for Education and Skills, Ruairí Quinn, in the coming year on topics, including graduate unemployment and emigration, and the protection of student grants.

The keynote address will be delivered tomorrow (Tuesday, March 15th) by John Hennessy, the new chair of the Higher Education Authority (HEA).

Gary Redmond, USI President, said: "Student leaders from around the country have gathered this week to discuss the many important issues currently facing the Higher & Further Education system both north and south of the border.

"We will be addressing a number of areas such as the ongoing emigration crisis among the young people of Ireland and the protection of student supports, such as the student maintenance grant," he said.

"At USI Congress, delegates from 'North and South' are meeting to discuss, decide on and implement new policy for the national organization," he explained, noting that delegates elect the next generation of student leaders.

"We are confident that the new USI team will ensure that the student message will be heard as clear and loud as ever by the new Education Minister, Ruairí Quinn.'
