SuperValu Creates 400 Jobs

A leading Irish supermarket group is to create up to 400 new jobs in Co Leitrim and in Co Laois.

SuperValu - that already has a workforce of 15,000 - said it is part of an investment programme worth over €25m and will see the supermarket chain opening two new stores and the extension and refurbishment of an additional 34 premises.

The new stores will be at Mountmellick, Co Laois and Manorhamilton, Co Leitrim.

Martin Kelleher, SuperValu's Managing Director said: "The trading environment in 2011 continues to be extremely difficult, but we are confident we can continue to adapt our offer in response to the budget conscious consumer."

335 New Homecare Jobs To Be Created
Homecare provider, Bluebird Care, have announced that it is to create 335 new jobs across the country. New positions for care assistants and support staff will created over the next six months, the homecare provider said. 175 of the new jobs will be in counties Wicklow, Donegal, Leitrim, Mayo and Sligo.

SuperValu To Create Over 200 Jobs With New Stores
Over 200 jobs are to be created this year by retailer SuperValu, who are to build three new stores. An investment of €7 million is to be spent on opening three new locations, with a further €12m to be spent on the expansion and refurbishment of the chains current 45 stores.

Dog Survives Five Days Off Cliff
An aging dog named Sam has been saved in a dramatic rescue, after being stranded on a cliff edge for five days. The operation to save the stricken spaniel lasted some four hours, with a member of the Sligo Leitrim Mountain Rescue team abseiling eight metres down a rock face to where the dog was lodged in shrubbery on a narrow ledge.

Polish Construction Worker Killed In Mountain Fall
This week's intensive search for a hill walker missing on the scenic slopes of Benbulben Mountain has ended in tragedy. The body of a Polish man - believed to have been a construction worker - who was tragically killed when he fell from a cliff on the mountain on Monday, is to be formally identified later today.
