Visitors Centre Honours Executed Editors
Dedicated in memory of three brave newspaper editors arrested by British Forces in April 1916, a visitors’ Centre in Cathal Brugha Barracks, Rathmines, Dublin has been officially opened by Minister Alan Shatter.
The Minister for Justice, Equality and Defence stated that he was honoured to open this centre.
Francis Sheehy Skeffington, Thomas Dickson and Patrick McIntyre, were executed without trial in the Exercise Yard of the Guard Room which is now the Visitors’ Centre on 26th April 1916. They were all pacifists and not involved in the fighting during the Easter Rising.
Minister Shatter stated that he was sure that they would be very proud of the work and the sacrifices that the Defence Forces have made in the cause of peace both at home and abroad.
Cathal Brugha Barracks, renamed from Portobello Barracks in May 1952, is named after the Minister for Defence in the first Dáil Cabinet. Minister Shatter stated that as the present Minister with responsibility for Defence it is appropriate that he today recognised the preservation of part of our nation’s rich history.
