Nursing Home Scheme In Crisis

A nursing home scheme which cares for around 22,600 people is said to be in crisis.

The 'Fair Deal' scheme, introduced in October 2009, cares for those in both public and private nursing homes.

Officials have informed the Minister for Health Dr James Reilly that funding will no longer be available beyond the current number of elderly people covered under the scheme.

The minister was made aware of the situation in recent days and has asked the HSE and Department of Health officials to outline proposals on how the scheme can operate for the remainder of the year.
