Connaught Telegraph Staff Commence Industrial Action
Workers at the Connaught Telegraph have commenced industrial action at the offices of the newspaper in Castlebar.
The paper announced last week that it will close its pre-press production department in the town and outsource it to Mullingar. Seven staff with over 200 years service will lose their jobs with the closure, which the UNITE trade union says can be avoided.
A similar situation at the Mayo News was averted last year when staff agreed to a restructuring of the way they worked. This resulted in the maintaining of a number of the jobs at that newspaper in Westport.
Staff at the Connaught Telegraph have been offered only statutory redundancy and this would be the latest severing of links with its heartland for a paper that was first published in 1828. Ironically the paper has been running a campaign in recent months urging its readers to ‘shop local, stay local’.
According to Claire Keane, UNITE Regional Officer: “We negotiated an agreed settlement at the Mayo News and are ready and willing to do the same again. Unfortunately the management has been unwilling to listen to any alternative solutions and it is this that has forced us into industrial action at Castlebar since Thursday. We hope that readers of the paper and those with the interests of the town and the region will support our members.”
