Tánaiste To Attend EU Foreign Ministers’ Meeting
The Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Eamon Gilmore, will travel to Luxembourg today for the monthly meeting of EU Foreign Ministers.
The EU’s response to the deteriorating situation in Syria will be a key issue at this meeting. The Tánaiste will emphasise the importance of the EU speaking out against the unacceptable violence against protestors in Syria, and continuing to support all those who aspire to democracy and human rights in that country and elsewhere in the Middle East.
Developments in Libya will also be reviewed. The Tánaiste and his colleagues will consider how to maintain pressure on Gaddafi and his regime with a view to an outcome which will enable full realisation of the democratic aspirations of the Libyan people.
Other items high on Monday’s agenda include recent developments in relation to the Middle East Peace Process and the continuing Gaza blockade, as well as the political and security situation in Sudan, ahead of the expected declaration of independence by South Sudan next month.
