Minister Probes 'Bungled' Transplant Airlift
The Irish Minister for Health has announced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the "bungled" airlift of a liver transplant case.
Dr James Reilly, said he will launch an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the delay in mobilising a helicopter to transfer Leitrim teen ager Maedhbh McGivern to London for a liver transplant operation on Saturday night.
Fine Gael Senator for North Leitrim and Seanad Spokesperson for Children, Imelda Henry, said on Monday she had received assurances from the Minister for Health that an investigation would take place.
"I spoke with the Minister for Health first thing this morning and he has assured me that he will personally investigate the circumstances of the bungled air lift for Maedhbh McGivern which resulted in her losing the liver that she has waited 11 months for.
"Conflicting reports are emerging as to what caused the delay in mobilising an aircraft and it is imperative that we get to the bottom of what happened to ensure that this never happens again. This whole incident has been very distressing for the McGivern family and the Minister has said that he will be speaking with them directly today."
The 14-year-old Leitrim girl missed her liver transplant at the weekend because of a failure by State agencies to arrange for her to be airlifted to a London hospital on time.
The Health Service Executive and the Department of Transport have given conflicting accounts of when the Coast Guard was first informed that an airlift was needed.
