Politicians Have A 'Mountain to Climb' For Good Cause

Oireachtas Members have a mountain to climb next weekend in an effort to raise funds for Arthritis Ireland.

TDs and Senators from across the political spectrum today joined forces for the announcement of the details of this year’s Houses of the Oireachtas hill walk.

The event will take place at Knockanaffrin Ridge, Comeragh Mountains, Co Waterford on 17th July. Oireachtas members and staff are undertaking the trek in a bid to raise funds for Arthritis Ireland.

This is the 4th year of the Oireachtas hill walk and since its inception it has raised thousands of euro for a host of good causes.

Minister Jimmy Deenihan, of the Oireachtas Hill Walkers Group said: “We are all really looking forward to the challenge next weekend. The Oireachtas hill walk has been enthusiastically supported by politicians from all sides and as a result several worthy causes have benefited.”

Among the Oireachtas members at today’s launch and who will be taking part in the walk include; Jimmy Deenihan TD, Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Eric Byrne TD and Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin TD.

John Church, Chief Executive Officer of Arthritis Ireland said today: “We are absolutely honoured to be a beneficiary of the annual Oireachtas hill walk. It is these types of initiatives that help us make a big difference to people with arthritis and their families”.

Women Arrested Over Emily Barut Murder
Gardaí have arrested a woman in her 50s this morning as part of an investigation into the murder of Emily Barut. 11-year-old Emily died at her home on Bachelors Walk, Tullamore on 15 September 2012. The woman is due to appear at Tullamore District this morning at 10:30 charged in relation to the investigation.

Chairs Elected To The Oireachtas
Two new Chairmen have been appointed to the Oireachtas Committee. Ciaran Lynch TD, for Cork South Central has been elected as Chairman to the newly formed Joint Oireachtas Committee on Environment, Transport, Culture and Gaeltacht. Noel Coonan TD for Tipperary North was elected to the Vice-Chair position in the same department.

TD And Senator Expenses Open To Public
The expenses of TD's and Senators in the Oireachtas has for the first time published on the internet. From today, anyone can view the expenses of their local representatives on the internet in a bid to improve voter confidence.
