French Police To Visit Cork In Murder Probe

A team of French investigators will visit Cork next month in order to interview 30 witnesses as part of its inquiry into the murder of French film producer Sophie Toscan du Plantier in 1996.

Ms Toscan du Plantier's badly beaten body was found at the entrance to her holiday home outside Schull on the morning of December 23, 1996.

No-one has ever been charged with the murder of the mother-of-one.

The French investigators are expected to arrive in west Cork in early to mid-September and spend around a week interviewing witnesses.

The focus of their investigation is likely to be in Schull, although investigators will also be able to travel to other areas of the country in order to interview witnesses who may have left the area since the murder.

It is thought that the team will consist of at least two police officers, two criminal forensic scientists and a French officer attached to the Serious Organised Crime Agency based in the UK.

Gardaí will be assisting the team with their investigation and it is believed that each investigator will be accompanied by a garda and an interpreter for interviews.

Gardaí have spoken to the witnesses that they are planning to interview and said that the majority are willing to speak to the French investigators. The investigators cannot compel anyone other than French citizens to speak to them, so any witnesses would have to voluntarily speak to them.
