Garda Helps Deliver Baby In Co Offaly

A Co Offaly couple have paid tribute to a Garda who helped to deliver their baby girl in their home yesterday.

Garda Nicola Gleeson, 34, helped to deliver Niamh Longworth's baby girl at her home in Daingean after receiving a distress call to attend her home.

Mrs Longworth, 28, had phoned an ambulance when she discovered she was about to give birth, but had to alert family members and gardaí when she realised that the ambulance would not arrive in time.

When Garda Gleeson arrived at Mrs Longworth's home, she found her and her husband Damien, 31, in the hallway, with Mrs Longworth about to give birth. She then helped the couple to deliver their third child, a baby girl called Mia, who weighed nearly eight pounds. The ambulance arrived five minutes after the birth. Both mother and baby are reported to be doing well.

The couple already have two other children, two boys, called Aaron (6) and Finn (14 months).

The Longworths have praised Garda Gleeson for her help and assistance in the birth of their child.
