Keating Leads Charity Swim From Holyhead To Dublin

Irish popstar Ronan Keating was the first to dive into the Irish Sea last night to lead a charity swim.

The singer will take the plunge along with five other celebrities in a £1m fundraising bid for Cancer Research.

The charity swim will see celebs relay 56 nautical miles (120 kilometres) from Holyhead, in Anglesey, North Wales, to Dublin.

Ronan is joined on the challenge by TV presenter Jenny Frost, Strictly star Pamela Stephenson, gadget guru Jason Bradbury and Olympic medallist swimmer Steve Parry. They are hoping to raise £1 million.

Ronan dived into the first leg of the challenge around 9pm last night, dressed in a black and gold wetsuit and a shocking pink swimming cap. The Boyzone singer departed to the claps and cheers of hundreds of onlookers.

The team, supported by five 'super swimmers', had been due to set off at lunchtime today, but favourable weather led organisers to bring the event forward by 15 hours.

Following his first swim, Keating wrote on Twitter: "Just finished my first leg for @JoinTheSwim. Wow incredible turn out for us all in Holyhead quite overwhelming. But glad I'm out of water. Time for a quick snooze before I'm back in the sea again."

Each team member will spend an hour in the water each time and it is estimated that the relay will take around 40 hours to complete. The team has already received £200k in sponsorship. The team are being sponsored by technology giant Samsung, who will donate £3,500 to every mile the team complete.

Keating is already known for his work with cancer charities. Following the death of his mother in 1998 from breast cancer, the singer set up the Marie Keating Foundation in his native Ireland in her memory.

The cause is also close to the heart of presenter Jenny Frost after her mother died of lung cancer in 2010, whilst while Pamela Stephenson supported her best friend during a breast cancer battle in 2009.

Sir Richard Branson who was to co- lead the team with Keating is unfortunately missing out. He was forced to pull out last week after his home burned down on Necker Island in the Caribbean.
