Search Begins For 'Golden Eagle'
Efforts are underway to try and locate a missing yacht after it has failed to arrive in the southwest coast of Ireland.
The vessel is overdue by almost a week; its route started from Bermuda and was due to finish in West Cork on Thursday last.
It has a crew of two on board - a 69-year-old Norwegian and a 60-year-old New Zealander.
Golden Eagle, the 32-foot yacht, left Bermuda in the middle of last month, and had been due to arrive in Crookhaven in Co Cork last week.
However, it never arrived, there has been no radio contact, and concern is growing for the safety of the two man crew.
It is understood that there has been no radio contact since the ship left Bermuda. Coastgaurd Services believe the yacht may have gotten into difficulties.
An initial search off the Cork coast was carried out by the Shannon based coastguard helicopter.
A spokesman for the coastguard service in Bermuda said the yacht would have been sailing through an area of the Atlantic where the tail end of Hurricane Katia was still active.
The Defence Forces said a number of ships and the Air Corps Casa patrol aircraft were on normal operating duties, including fisheries patrol, but have been put on alert to look out for the yacht.
"We have ships at sea and there are of course airborne maritime patrols ongoing anyway, so of course we will be very much on the lookout for any signs of this vessel," he said.
