Gallagher Attacked Over FF Past
Independent Presidential candidate Sean Gallagher came under attack last night about his role in Fianna Fail (FF) during a bilingual televised debate on TG4.
Mr Gallagher, who has been identified by opinion polls as the front-runner in the race, was scrutinised by his opponents over his views on the economy and his "lack" of work on the state’s high unemployment rate.
Senator David Norris said that Mr Gallagher could have done more about unemployment when he was a member of the Fianna Fail executive while Labour candidate Michael D Higgins said that Gallagher stood for "speculative economy".
In response to the criticisms Gallagher reminded them of his record of community and youth work.
The candidates also spoke on the future of the Irish language and gave their thoughts on the celebrations for the anniversary of 1916.
On the subject of Amhran na bhFiann, only Michael D. Higgins and Independent Sean Gallagher expressed a dissatisfaction with the anthem.
Sean Gallagher said he would like to see a new anthem to reflect a new Ireland; fellow candidate Martin McGuinness referred to the entrepreneur’s views as "revisionist".
Most of the exchanges during the debate were in English with only Mr Higgins fluent in Irish.
During the debate Dana Rosemary Scallon said she did not regret standing, while Mary Davis insisted she regarded herself as an Independent.
Gay Mitchell stressed the need for political experience in the office.
As Election Day looms, just over a week away, the candidates will prepare for their last televised debate next Monday and continue on their campaign trails.
The last debate will be aired on Monday night during RTE's The Frontline programme.
