President To Attend Removal Of Garda

The outgoing President Mary McAleese will this evening attend the removal of Garda Ciarán Jones who died on Monday while trying to help commuters who were struck in the severe flooding.

The 25-year-old, who was off duty at the time, was swept away by floodwaters at Ballysmuttan bridge in County Wicklow.

His removal will take place this evening to St Brigid's Church, in Manor Kilbride, in Blessington, at around 5.20pm.

His funeral mass will take place tomorrow.

Another victim of the flooding was found in a flooded basement apartment in Dublin.

The Filipino woman, believed to be aged in her 30s, drowned after her apartment became submerged.

The east of Ireland fell victim to heavy rainfall at the beginning of the week that saw a major emergency being declared in the Dublin region.

Passengers were trapped in a Dublin bus by floodwater and there was widespread disruption to the public transport service in Dublin.

Meanwhile major disruption was caused to shop owners in Dundrum Shopping Centre when the centre had to be evacuated due to first floor flooding.

The River Slang burst its banks and created a surge of water, which flowed through the lower level of the centre.

Meanwhile insurer Aviva has said it is to make €10m available immediately to customers affected by the recent flooding.

The insurance company says it has received over 1,000 claim related calls since the torrential rain that caused chaos on Monday night.

Some 70% of the calls relate to property - with motor claims accounting for the other 30%.

Aviva says is has created the fund to ensure it can make advance payments to customers to purchase much-needed items that were lost during the floods.
