Nash Welcomes Lourdes Emergency Dept Intervention

Labour TD Gerald Nash has welcomed the government's intervention at the Emergency Department of Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital.

TD Nash said the move was exactly the kind of approach he had been urging the HSE and the Minister for Health to take in order to alleviate the serious overcrowding problems at the hospital.

"It is important that patients get the care and support to which they are entitled and that staff can work in a safe and dignified environment.

"These measures shouldn't simply represent a short-term intervention, but the start of a process designed to make the system work more effectively over the long term."

The hospital is the main emergency department for Louth Meath Hospital Group and is supported by an interim medical assessment unit and short stay unit on site and by a minor injuries unit in Louth County Hospital Dundalk and the Emergency Department in Our Lady's Hospital Navan.

Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital Drogheda is a major teaching hospital. The hospital is part of the Louth Meath Hospital Group and includes Louth County Hospital Dundalk and Our Lady's Hospital Navan.

The hospital provides acute medical and surgical services as well as maternity services to the catchment area of Louth, Meath and the surrounding hinterland including parts of north county Dublin.
