Students Meet To Protest Against Cuts And Fees
Thousands of students have marched on Dublin to protest against the Government's suggested increase in student fees and possible cut to maintenance grants.
The protests follow reports that existing grants and maintenance support for postgraduates could be scrapped from next year, to save some €50m a year.
Students and supporters gathered from 12.30pm in Parnell Square, before marching to Government Buildings from 2.30pm.
Some 200 buses were used to carry students from college campuses across Ireland to the Union of Students Ireland demonstration.
Speaking ahead of the protest, the newly elected Fianna Fail Ógra chief, Eamon Quinlan, said: "Since the day it was elected, the most striking feature of this Government has been its emphasis on spin rather than substance. The long list of very specific promises made to communities and interest groups around the country has been steadily and cynically abandoned.
"For Ógra, the complete betrayal on education has been a major concern, but the betrayal of voters is obvious in almost every department of Government."
"We are calling on our members to play their part in highlighting local promises that are being broken and also to take a role in highlighting the campaign at a national level."
Union of Students in Ireland president Gary Redmond said it was vital that the Government protects education in next month's Budget.
The USI has also planned an overnight camp outside the Department of Education on Marlborough Street starting this evening.
