Kenny Calls Taxi Driver Attack 'Deplorable'
The Dublin North East Labour TD has joined with the Irish Taxi Federation in deploring the death of Moses Ayanwole, who was assaulted on Wednesday.
Sean Kenny, who is also member of the Oireachtas Transport Committee, said assaults on taxi drivers, who provide a public service, were all too common and there was a need for better Garda security strategy to deal with it.
"It is particularly poignant that this death, involving a taxi driver who was a member of the migrant Nigerian community, occurred a day after the forced resignation of the Mayor of Naas who he made racist comments in the media earlier this week," said the Labour TD.
"All public representatives must condemn racist attitudes and comments that can lead to assaults, sometimes fatal, on members of the migrant community" he added.
The Irish Taxi Drivers' Federation (IDTF) said it wants the National Transport Authority (NTA) to provide grants for safety equipment following the attack.
ITDF president John Usher said the NTA had a significant amount of money raised from taxi drivers' licence fees and some of this should be used to subsidise the price of safety equipment.
Moses Ayanwole died on Thursday after the assault on him while he was working as a taxi driver at a Dublin city centre taxi rank on Wednesday night.
The 41-year-old taxi driver was injured during the assault in Dublin's Pearse Street. The man was pronounced dead at St James's Hospital on Thursday afternoon.
A man in his 20s that was arrested in connection with the incident has been released without charge.
A file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions. The taxi driver was attacked by a man near the junction of Erne Street. The man then left the scene and walked in the direction of Erne Street.
